| The harbor was frequently blocked with
drift ice during the emigration period. During such periods it was almost
impossible for passenger, mail, or supply boats to enter the harbor to
load or unload. The foundations of Langabúð, one of the oldest
buildings in Djúpivogur, date to 1589 when German merchants began trading
in the town. It was raided by Algerian pirates in 1627. Löngubúð
warehouse, one of the oldest commercial buildings in Iceland, has parts
dating from 1790. It now houses an art
museum.
