From a lithograph by Auguste Mayer (1805-1890). Mayer was a member of an expedition to Iceland and Greenland equipped by the French government. The lithograph was first published in Atlas Historique in 1842.

Reykjavík 1880

In 1870 Reykjavik had one of the two hospitals in Iceland. This picture shows the church, the parliament building, and the Thorvaldsson statue in a city with a population of about 2,000. This picture is from Danske Billeder for Skole og Hjem by Theodor Siersted, 1899.
