Seyðisfjörður is a fishing village that is
cut in half by a river that runs through the town. There is an important
herring fishery in this area. Emigrants would have to depend on local
hospitality in these small villages while they waited for their ship to
arrive. Around 1906 a Norwegian company established the first Icelandic
telegraph station here.

1887 was one of the worst years for pack
ice around Iceland. Spring was very late and livestock starved for lack of
fresh pasture. There were more emigrants in that year than in any
other.
