Homestead files are searched to determine if our families settled on
farms and if so, where they settled. We are looking for Thorsteinn
Hojgaard and Grimur Einarsson.
National
Archives of Canada is searched for the name Hojgaard and spelling
variations like Hejgaard, Hajgaard, Heygaard, and Hygaard. No entries are
found. The same search is performed for Einarsson and Einarson. A total of
83 entries are found, but none of them is named Grimur. From this we
conclude that they either did not settle in Canada or did not take up
farming.
Bureau of
Land Management in the United States is searched for the same
names in Minnesota and North Dakota. The search in Minnesota finds no
variations of Hojgaard and four Einarsons who are not named Grimur. The
search in North Dakota finds one Hygaard with the wrong first name. A
search for Einarsson finds 13 Einarssons, one of which is named Grimur. It
shows that a land patent was issued on May 2, 1890. The details are shown
below.

The
Federal Township and Range System explains the notation of the land
survey.
The
Pembina Township Map shows that Township 159-N Range 56-W is Gardar
Township. We can then go to Plat Maps of Pembina
in 1893 to select the Plat Map of Gardar Township and see where the
land is located.
From this information, we conclude that we should look
at Saga Islendinga i Nordur-Dakota by Thorstina Jackson
Walters for more
information.
