The Emigration from Iceland to North America

Vesturfaraskrá is an invaluable resource for the Icelandic genealogist because it contains a list of nearly all emigrants from Iceland between 1870 and 1914. If we look up Ingigerdur Ofeigsdottir in Vesturfaraskrá, we are referred to the following entry. The entry has been rearranged slightly to make room for translations, which appear in blue.

    Emigration Record for Ingigerdur Ofeigsdottir

This tells us that Ingigerdur and her husband, Thorsteinn Hojgaard, left Helgafell farm and sailed from Vopnafjord on the S.S. Camoens in 1882 with a ticket to Quebec City. They were accompanied by their children Thorstein (4), Nikulas (2), and Ofeigur (newborn). They also brought Jonina Thorsteinsdottir (9) Ingigerdur's daughter by another man. Entering the daughter and mother at www.familysearch.com shows that Jonina was christened Nov 30, 1873 at Hofteigur I Jokuldal, Nordur-Mulasysla. The father was Thorsteinn Gudmundsson. A son, Stefan, was christened by the same couple on Aug 23 1875. Since he did not accompany them, he must have died in infancy or possibly been given up for adoption.
Looking up Gudrun Thorgrimsdottir in the same way gives the following extract.

    Gudrun Thorgrimsdottir Imigration

This tells us that Gudrun and her husband, Grimur Einarsson, left Strandhofn farm and sailed from Seydisfjord on the S.S. Verona in 1876 with a ticket to Quebec City. They were accompanied by their son Einar (3) and her daughter Ingibjorg (21). This confirms the information from www.familysearch.com that showed that Gudrun had remarried. Ingibjorg will later marry in Canada.
